The SJIS Mathematics team were proud to participate in the prestigious Singapore Math Team Global Challenge (SINGA), held in Kuala Lumpur from 17th-19th November 2018. This was the inaugural edition of the competition, and it was much more than a pop quiz– SINGA introduced an exciting and ambitious challenge for mathematics students, with individual and team-based problem solving challenges.
SJIS’ bright young pupils weren’t just there to make up the numbers – the talented team came away with a total of 1 Gold, 3 Silver and 3 Bronze Awards!

In the SINGA Individual Category, Ewan Koay Chien Liang (Year 11) grabbed a Gold Award, with two students – Tan Jia Jun (Y11) and Wayan Wong Jian Wei (Y10) – securing Silver Awards. In the SINGA Team Category, Wayan Wong Jian Wei won the Silver Award, with Ewan Koay, Tan Jia Jun and Brandon Tan (all Y11) bagging the Bronze.

Professor Rajendran, who completed his Ph.D. in Curriculum Teaching and Educational Policy from the SJIS’ incentive plan awarded these students for their achievement with generous cash prizes – a Gold Award or equivalent receives RM1500, while a Silver or Bronze and their equivalents receive RM1000. As part of the team to win the Bronze Award, Brandon Tan was awarded a consolation prize of RM250.Tunku Dato Seri Iskandar, our Board of Governors Advisor, and Mr Rusland, our BOG Chairman presented the deserving students with their respective cheques today. This memorable moment marks a milestone for the SJIS Mathematics department, and we look forward to the next edition of the competition to multiply our success!
